Locating Slippery Highway Sites by Accident Analysis

چکیده
IN T R O D U C T IO N It is generally agreed that a wet pavement surface presents less resistance to skidding than does the same surface in a dry condition. It is also well known that ice and snow are very slippery; but on the other hand, they are special conditions which do not reflect any skid characteristic of the pavement surface. It is, therefore, the wet surface condition that is critical relative to the minimum coefficient of friction that will be provided by a particular pavement surface.

A Comparative Appraisal of Roadway Accident for Asia-Pacific Countries
This paper describes an attempt to shed some light on road safety in Asia Pacific region by characterizing and assessing its road accidents. The relevant national road accident data were extracted from centralized data sources of international agencies. Due to data incompleteness and missing values, 21 Asia Pacific countries, presenting more than half of the world’s population, were selected fo...
متن کاملEmpirical assessment of the impact of highway design exceptions on the frequency and severity of vehicle accidents.
Compliance to standardized highway design criteria is considered essential to ensure roadway safety. However, for a variety of reasons, situations arise where exceptions to standard-design criteria are requested and accepted after review. This research explores the impact that such design exceptions have on the frequency and severity of highway accidents in Indiana. Data on accidents at careful...
متن کاملCase-control analysis in highway safety: Accounting for sites with multiple crashes.
There is an increased interest in the use of epidemiological methods in highway safety analysis. The case-control and cohort methods are commonly used in the epidemiological field to identify risk factors and quantify the risk or odds of disease given certain characteristics and factors related to an individual. This same concept can be applied to highway safety where the entity of interest is ...

متن کاملIdentification and Prioritization of Accident-Prone Segments using International Roughness Index
During last decades, owing to the increase in a number of vehicles, the rate of accident occurrence grows significantly. Efforts must be made to provide efficient tools to prioritize segments requiring safety improvement and identify influential factors on accidents. This objective of the research was to determine the safety oriented threshold of International Roughness Index (IRI) to recognize...
